The lies! The betrayal. I swear these books have me wrapped around its finger. It felt so good to be back in the world that the Caraval series created, especially with my favorite morally grey character, Jacks, Prince of Hearts, taking center stage. Even knowing that the end of these books always throw me for a loop, it still did it! Also that Jack’s kisses are fatal so I know a kiss isn’t going to happen (yet) but MY GOODNESS with the tension and banter, I just want it to happen so badly.
Once Upon a Broken Heart follows the events of Finale from the Caraval series (which I would highly recommend reading before this). Evangeline Fox seeks out the Prince of Hearts to stop her stepsister from marrying the man she loves, and it is rumored that Jacks is still reeling from a broken heart (iykyk—don’t want to spoil for those who haven’t read Finale). Jacks cuts her a deal, but a deal with the Fates always comes with a cost— and you have to be careful of your wording. After the repercussions of her wish, she is sent by the Empress to the North to vie for Prince Apollo’s hand. Hoping for her happily ever after, she participates. To make up for the events of her wish, she brings her stepsister Marisol. Her bargain with Jacks is not yet complete, however, and she is forced to kiss whoever he tells her to, no matter the consequence. Each kiss plays towards Jacks master plan, one in which Evangeline— his Little Fox— is the sole key. Peasant, princess, fugitive, what consequences come from a wish made out of desperation.
Would I recommend? YES
